What is Platelet Rich Plasma?
Platelet Rich Plasma is a safe and reliable hair growth stimulation treatment. It is a simple non-surgical treatment that is performed efficiently to minimise recovery time and maximise results. The primary use for Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is to organically stimulate newly implanted or inactive follicles into an active growth phase using growth factors from the blood supply. PRP not only stimulates implanted follicles but also strengthens existing follicles delaying and sometimes reversing the hair loss process. PRP can either be used in conjunction with a Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) procedure to promote faster hair growth and recovery or it can be used individually on the scalp to protect current hair follicles, it is used either pre or post-operative of DHI treatment. PRP is a safe method of treatment as it uses the patient’s own blood supply, the concentrated growth factors are extracted from the blood which are then activated prior to being injected into the suffering area. Platelet Rich Plasma has established itself as an effective treatment for many cosmetic procedures over the past 25 years, it is a promising long term solution for hair loss sufferers.
PRP and How it Works
The blood supply contains red and white cells as well as platelets – it is these platelets that provide the growth factors. PRP works by separating the platelets from the other cells in plasma (blood supply) and the separated platelets and added back to the supply. PRP uses your own cells that will not be rejected by the immune system, the cells are isolated by spinning 50ml of blood in a centrifuge to extract the platelets that assist in recovery and tissue regeneration. These enriched platelets are then injected to the areas of hair loss or areas of newly implanted follicles to provide healthy natural results.
The treatment takes approximately 60 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia with 50ml of blood being drawn which is then spun using a centrifuge. The extracted concentrated platelets are then injected into the scalp, these platelets then naturally regenerate the health and condition of the scalp. The results of the treatment are achieved by the reactivation of the weak cells causing hair loss.
How many sessions of PRP will I need?
Depending on the size of area treated with DHI or stage of hair loss sufferers will determine how many sessions of PRP are advised. The frequency of treatment is case dependent whether it is early or advanced stages of hair loss, however, a patient can undergo 4 sessions of PRP for the first year approximately every 6 weeks with regular reviews. PRP is a treatment that is encouraged for patients not suitable for Direct Hair implantation and those wishing to prevent hair loss and protect hair follicles.
Candidates for PRP
- Males and females suffering with Androgenic Alopecia (pattern baldness)
- Sufferers of thinning hair
- Unsuitable candidates for Direct Hair Implantation
PRP can be used for the prevention of hair loss and the stimulation of hair follicles, which makes it the perfect addition to support a Direct Hair Implantation procedure.
